Fruit flies are serious pests of fruits and vegetables, and pose a major obstacle to the successful establishment of horticulture industries and trade in the Asia-Pacific region. Griffith University , Australia , in formal collaboration with ASEAN has established an International Centre for the Management of Pest Fruit Flies (ICMPFF) to consolidate and enhance technical collaboration for improved management of these devastating pests.

Collaboration involves Australia in partnership with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore and Brunei .
Griffith University has established the headquarters of the ICMPFF at its Nathan campus in Brisbane, Australia .
The Government of Malaysia as represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry will host a Regional Center located in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia .
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Griffith University and the Government of Malaysia on 7 December 2004 . Pursuant to Article 3.2 of the MOU the parties agree to operate the Regional Center.
